Horses in the Autumn Mist | Info + Comments (26)

Before I write something about this image I would like to that everyone of you for stopping by and everyone who has bookmarked my site on Photoblogs.org, and voted for me on the Photoblogs Awards and on VFXY. I was very surprised and of course happy to see this blog of mine in the top 10. This makes me very proud.

But now to the image....

I have had a family trip to Germany and knew I will not have so much time to shoot there, but I knew about this little field just around the corner and the three horses which are usually on it. Also I knew that it can be very foggy at this time of the year and I pre-visualized an image like this already before I left to Germany. So the only thing I had to do was wait... and that I did. The whole time, every morning, no fog, but on the very last day of my little holiday the conditions were right and I quickly headed out, and it surely was fun.

But I can tell you, I'm really not that much of a wildlife-shooter (I know this really doesn't qualify as wildlife, but it's not a pure landscape either). They move! All the time! I didn't wanted to bump up the ISO too much, but I think I should haved raised it at least one stop more, but that's too late now. Even though they were calmly eating all the time they were also calmly changing places all the time. Since I usually shoot landscapes I'm used to take my time framing an image. It felt that every time I had the framing I wanted, one, two or all the horses already left my framing. At one point they came around to me and my tripod just to leave the frame completely and say to "Hallo".

Either way, I'm rather happy with the result and I got a series of decent images from that shoot. On this image I would have liked the horse to be slightly more to the right or left, but he just strolled where to where he wanted to be. I was hoping that he would look up to me, and he was so friendly to do that.

As for the post-processing, I haven't done too much with it, since I wanted to preserve the foggy feeling and muted colours. Just some adjustments in Lightroom followed by some minor levels and curves in LAB mode in Photoshop. You can see a copy of the un-processed RAW image following the link below this text.

I hope you like the image also and thanks for visiting.

Thanks everybody for your comments, I appreciate that a lot. I'm very happy how, and the few more shots that are coming up, turned out. Without the mist the scene wouldn't work. Luckily it came as I hoped.

Thanks a lot to all of you. It's very nice to hear that you like it. Another one from this series will be up on Thursday, that is, if I don't get something new and interesting in the meanwhile.

The mist, landscape and of course the horses create an excellent composition. A great job on this shot!
